Dr. John Mack is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Founder of a Cambridge-based organization: The Center for Psychology and Social Change. Over a forty year period, in addition to many articles covering a wide range of subjects, he has written several books and chapters, including a Pulitzer Price winning biography on T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) entitled: “A Prince of Our Disorder” (1976), and has written two books on the alien encounter phenomenon: “Abduction” (1994) and “Passport To The Cosmos” (1999). His chapter “Looking Beyond Terrorism: Transcending the Mind of Enmity” will appear in The Psychology Of Terrorism (2002), edited by Chris E. Stout.

A leading authority on the spiritual and transformational elements of alien encounters, Dr. Mack’s twelve years of study has focused on the consideration of the merits of an expanded notion of reality, one of which allows for experiences that may not fit the Western materialist paradigm, yet deeply affect people’s lives.

Concurrent with his research into alien encounters, Dr. Mack has pursued an understanding of how shifts in consciousness and behavior can invite sustainable, equitable, and peaceful ways of living. His work has also focused on exploring methods of expanding consciousness, and the necessity of moving beyond a narrowly materialist worldview toward a paradigm of relationship and interconnectedness.

The UFO Encounter: What are its Psychosocial and Political Implications?
We sense that the UFO encounter phenomenon holds meaning for our lives that transcends its scientific significance. This talk explores possible philosophical perspectives we need to bring to its understanding and what the phenomenon might mean for identity and the human future.
