Mark McLaughlin, a professional researcher and writer with more than 200 published articles, trained as a historian and cultural geographer at the University of Nevada, Reno. His work appears regularly in California and Nevada newspapers; he was awarded the Nevada State Press writing award five times. An author of three books, Mark frequently writes historical articles for such magazines as Sierra Heritage, Nevada, Weatherwise, and his work appears in the Grolier Educational 2002 Science Annual. He is also a professional lecturer, a frequent guest on regional television and radio programs, and a consultant for the History Channel. Mark spent 2 years researching and writing the Alternative Energy Institute's highly acclaimed new book, "Turning the Corner: Energy Solutions for the 21st Century".
Mark will provide a general overview of the serious problems associated with traditional fossil fuels as well as nuclear fission. These fuels are limited, have polluted the planet and are killing us. The next step in 21st century energy production will entail the use of clean, renewable systems like wind, solar and biomass power. These technologies already exist and definitely produce electricity, but can they adequately replace abundant and inexpensive oil? Mark will also give a brief glance at fuel cells and the highly touted "hydrogen economy" of the future. Finally, his presentation will explore what kinds of breakthrough energy and propulsion technologies may be developed in the 21st century. Future energy and propulsion systems must be clean, carbonless and possibly unlimited. Innovative professional scientists in laboratories around the world are pushing the boundaries of new energy physics as they search for the secrets to extracting power from energy that pervades all of space. AEI supports organizing and funding a coalition of top scientists who will work together and share information in order to develop the alternative energy systems that civilization will need to thrive in the 21st century. |
